Half Past Closing Time

This project was an exercise in creating a 3D scene based on a piece of 2D artwork, and then compositing it with the character from that artwork. Assembled in Unreal Engine 4, the end result is something rather similar to aesthetic seen in FX's "Archer".

The original artwork was created by "DrVauclair". It is shown and used here with her permission. Check out her DeviantArt here: https://www.deviantart.com/drvauclair

Final composite. Fun fact: The original art was monochrome, so the 3D comp needed to be as well. To make this work, I handled desaturation at the material level, and kept lighting pure white. No color correction tricks here!

After sourcing assets and setting up the basic environment, it was just a matter of adding decoration, tuning lighting, and cleaning up rendering details. Volumetric fog helped pull the character into the 3D space, but needed to be toned down at the end.
